1ST THING THAT PISSES ME OFF: THE DAILY ILLINI.

i'm the sort of artist and humorist who likes to use current events in his work. since this whole matt vroom versus the jewish community started last friday, i've attempted to utilize the situation to my own means.

since the controversal comic ran, the DI office received an insurmountable number of angry phone calls and letters. the higer-ups banned vroom from making comics for a month, which i suppose was justified (instead of him getting fired, of course). however, because the DI staff really wants to sweep this entire ordeal under the rug, they had the audacity to actually prevent ME from running any new comics concerning the situation or even vroom himself. it is their intention, i believe, that the general public should "forget about vroom" lest -- and i quote the email the editor-in-chief personally sent me -- "open up a sore for the people who were offended by it."

my opinion? bullshit.

now in no way do i condone what vroom had done on friday, but that doesn't mean that i or any comic merely mentioning vroom should be censored or prohibited to run. i find it hard to believe that people would be sensitive or overtly distraught at vroom's name or image. in fact, i wasn't making any political statement or defending/attacking vroom's controversal comic; i was trying to make fun of him. the comics, which were SUPPOSED to run on monday and wednesday respectively, are shown here. these comics are not necessarily offensive towards the jewish population but rather a joke on vroom's own behalf. take them as you will.

the editorial page even received letters about "the way life should be" and "lecture hall." supposedly people were even offended by underage drinking.

if this keeps up and the comics section is going to end being politically correct fodder for the masses, i swear to god i will resign -- it's not worth working under strict conditions that suffocate my creativity or humor. i mean, for fuck's sake, it's college: swearing, drinking, and inanity run rampant throughout this fucking campus. a college newspaper should reflect the relatively liberal, consequently non-serious image that defines the institution itself. punish the singular ignorant act of one individual, for all i care... don't punish or scrutinize anyone else, otherwise it'll be a sad, sad day for creativity, humor, free expression, and the university itself.
