In retrospect, the Belle and Sebastian/The New Pornographers concert was pretty damned good; the memories of that evening were, well, memorable. That night, however, I was in a pretty shitty mood: it was hot, my body was sore for standing up too much and trying to hail a lost Allan by waving a bundle of posters for half an hour, and I didn't get an ounce of sleep the night before.
But like I said, looking back it was an indeed an enjoyable and memorable experience -- the kind I'd go so far as to say "one of the best concerts I've been to." The New Pornographers were kick ass, and they played my all-time favorite song, "The Bleeding Heart Show." It was also then and there that I have fallen head over heels for Neko Case. Too bad the lighting was non-existent, as they were considered an "opening band" for Belle and Sebastian.
B&S also had a spiffilicious show. I especially loved how Stuart Murdoch danced up and down and all around the stage, even stage-diving into the audience. Likewise, Stevie Jackson's weird and quirky dances proved to be worth the fatigue and aches I was experiencing.
My only real gripe about the show was that they played too much of their new stuff. Don't get me wrong; it's good, but I fell in love with the polite, very introspective Belle and Sebastian -- the kind of B&S who played "Dirty Dream Number Two" and "This is Just a Modern Rock Song". I'm glad that they played "Lazy Line Painter Jane" (with a random member of the audience sharing her vocals for the female part) and "The State I Am In" at the end of their first set.
